What Is Your Website For?

Many small businesses recognize the need for a website and all too often they rush to buy some template online from some company who may or may not be a local provider and in a matter of sometimes minutes, they have a working generic website for their company.

If you are one of those businesses, you should stop and ask yourself, “What is my website supposed to do?” Some business owners will answer this question with a very detailed description of the miraculous things that the website will accomplish, a place where all current customers will visit daily and a place where potential customers will be excited to visit looking for solutions that they have just the answer for. Others have very little expectations, perhaps they see the website as just a place to describe their business, and provide a phone number and address for potential customers. Of course there are answers in between these two as well.

My suggestion is to consider your website as a extension of your current marketing tools. If you are already advertising in local papers, magazines, radio, newletters, ezines, or any other forms of advertising, your website will serve as another method for generating leads. Keep in mind that your website may very well be the first impression of your business for some of your visitors. Within seconds of landing on your homepage, they will decide to stay and read or to leave. The more professional your site is, the easier it is to read, the more likely your potential customers will want to find out more. It is important that from your website, you look like an expert in your field.

It’s important to tailor your business to your industry and your particular company. Having a clear understanding of what you want out of your website will go a long way when it comes to the design and presentation of your site. You should make sure that the web designer you use understands your objective so they can work on a strategy to communicate that object to your visitors. Whether you find a local web designer or a long distance web designer, the most important thing is communication. A good developer will ask you the right questions and with your answers be able to determine your objective even if you are unable to put it into words.

With this economy, it may seem wise to hold off on representing your company online, possibly for financial reasons associated with the costs of web design and hosting. However, it’s actually quite the opposite. Developing an online presence may be just the thing you need to extend your current marketing efforts in order to draw in more business and keep your company thriving. With more and more people gaining access to the Internet, many initial searches for a service or product begins online. If your business is not there, it won’t be found! And for those who know your business exists already, what happens when they do a search for you online and can’t find you? Sometimes, it is perceived that you are not legitimate or you are too small of a company and they may take their business elsewhere. After all, how many major retailers can you think of that do not have a website?

Developing a website is almost a necessity for a small business. Small businesses can appear equal to large business just by the way they present themselves online. If your business is still offline, what are you waiting for?
